December 2020

Dear Friend of Families in Need,

Being forced out of work by a positive COVID-19 test in June could have crushed a 24-year-old mother’s hopes of overcoming homelessness with her kindergartner any time soon. Because of generous people like you, it didn’t.

After three months of living in their car, “Betsy” and her 5-year-old son came to Family Renew Community to begin their journey out of homelessness. Two days later, Betsy was exposed to the coronavirus while training a new hire on the job at a pizza place.

Blessedly, neither Betsy nor her son, who also tested positive, became ill. Though they were isolated in their Family Renew apartment in DeLand for several weeks while waiting for the virus to clear, they were not alone. With socially distanced guidance and assistance from her case manager, Betsy applied for pandemic unemployment benefits, saved money and prepared to seek a better job. She’s now a leasing agent for an apartment complex, and provides for her son in an affordable two-bedroom apartment there.

Betsy’s is one of many stories of perseverance on the path out of homelessness made possible this year by Family Renew Community supporters. Twenty-five local families moved from homelessness to permanent housing in 2020 in the face of unprecedented challenges posed by the public health crisis.

Our Ready for 2021 campaign aims to raise $40,000 by Dec. 31 to equip us to deliver a quick and permanent end to the experience of homelessness for more families, whatever the new year brings. If we make that ambitious goal, the Daytona Beach Street Rods will add $1,000 to the total. Would you be willing to make a special year-end gift of $50, $100 or the amount you can afford so families can lift themselves out of homelessness, no matter what 2021 throws their way?

Through the kindness of people like you, Family Renew Community has been helping local families escape desperate situations and restore their lives since 1989. On average now, families we serve in our 32 apartments in Holly Hill, Daytona Beach and DeLand beat homelessness in six to seven months. We have evidence that 95 percent of them remain stably housed in the months and years afterward.

Housing is only the beginning of what your donation will help bring to homeless families. With expert guidance, mothers and fathers will improve their employment, money management and parenting. They’ll pay down debts, repair credit and build savings. When they’re back out on their own, they’ll be prepared to prosper.

You can be the reason a family becomes ready to leave homelessness behind forever in 2021. Please click “Donate” here or at the top or bottom of this page to give by credit card or see instructions for paying by mail.

We realize many people have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in many ways. We hope you and yours are in good health and good spirits. Please consider donating if you can. Your prayers and advocacy for our mission with friends and relatives and in your social media circles also mean the world to us. Thank you for all you do to help homeless families with children.
