If you haven’t been to the Secret Attic lately, you haven’t been to the Secret Attic.
Family Renew Community’s Secret Attic Thrift Store has lost its clutter and found its flow. Its open, comfortable look is complemented with a chalkboard motif and upbeat oldies on the speakers.
The changes, however, go beyond wider aisles, a more logical layout, cool new signage and a nostalgic soundtrack. The pricing is simpler — and in many cases lower — than before. And despite the extra elbow room, there’s just as much on the sales floor in terms of women’s and men’s clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry, household items, books, furniture, appliances and home accessories.
“There’s probably more. We utilized the space a lot better,” says Assistant Manager Ron Clark, who runs the store with oversight from Family Renew Community Executive Director Tony Deobil. The selection stays fresher, too, Ron said. “Now that all the regular clothes are $2, everything moves out faster.”
The store still has its boutique section of designer and other top-quality clothing, shoes and purses for women, with those items priced a bit higher, he said. Storewide, though, the new philosophy is “price-it-to-sell,” he says.
All of the merchandise is donated, and the proceeds from its sale fund Family Renew Community’s programs to help homeless families with children in Volusia County.
Reaction from the public has been overwhelmingly positive, Ron says.
A longtime customer browsing the racks in the boutique on a recent Thursday morning said the changes are an improvement to a store she already loved.
“I stumbled on this place a few years ago. When I want to have a nice day out, leisure time, I just come here,” said the woman, who preferred her name not be published. “Sometimes I buy. Sometimes I don’t. The people here are really nice.”
