If you come into Family Renew Community’s Secret Attic Thrift Store looking for nothing in particular, you just may find something extraordinary.
Like a bridal-gowned doll that look just like your niece who’s getting married next year. Or some strappy, bedazzled purple heels for your next Red Hat Society luncheon.
A national study of thrift store shoppers published in 2010 showed 48 percent had made a purchase for a “specific purpose,” such as needing a unique item for a themed event. But 31 percent had bought something they happened upon just because it was unusual — behavior benignly labeled as “eccentric” by researchers.
For the eccentrics out there, we recommended frequent visits. You never know what you’ll find amidst the donated merchandise on our shelves. If you are looking for something to fit a theme, ask our manager, Barbara Bradley.
“I help people pull together costumes all the time,” she says.
