Stories from the field

We try to challenge the parents in our residential programs for families with children experiencing homelessness to be creative and flexible in problem solving in life’s issues.

We have one mom with three children who was having car troubles. We try to teach our families how to take responsibility for their own lives. This mom sought out a family member who taught her how to service her car herself at a fraction of the cost.

We have one single mom with one child who is slowly adjusting to her new disciplined life. This mom was working in a minimum wage job and was able to apply for and receive a higher paying job. She is learning how to step out of her comfort zone and thrive in her new situation.  She is also dealing with the death of her father who was her life anchor. Our program staff are really helping her grow up and learn how to stand on her own two feet and she is really feeling good about herself.

We have one single mom who came to us estranged from her daughter. Family Renew Community was part of her reunification plan and they were quickly reunited just after admission to our program.  Their child protective caseworker is very pleased with the mom’s progress and the structure she is learning as part of Family Renew’s restoration program.  They have truly learned the importance of family and are busy doing family activities both with their immediate family and their extended family.
