Tomoka kids help our kids

Who would have thought a trading post on the an elementary school campus could be so profitable?

I had the pleasure and honor on Friday to visit with the fifth-graders at Tomoka Elementary School to tell them about what Family Renew Community does for homeless families with children and to accept their $375 check for the purpose. It represented about half the proceeds from a class project last year — the Tomoka Trading Post. Then then-fourth-grade class sold items to schoolmates to learn how to run a business. After doing some research, they chose two local charities — us and Light the Way, which helps with the everyday needs of patients battling cancer — to split the profits.

The students listened attentively, asked great questions and showed they really care about kids whose families need a hand up. Really made my day!
