More than 2,600 school-age children and countless infants and toddlers experienced homelessness last year in Volusia County. Homeless children have:
■ higher levels of emotional and behavioral problems and increased risk of serious health problems;
■ greater likelihood to repeat a grade, be expelled or drop out of school, and have low academic performance.
These effects and others are avoidable or reversible if homelessness is brief.
